Watts Humphrey
Security Changes Everything
Presentation Overview

The software security problem is serious and it is getting worse. Any
complex system that is exposed to the public in almost any way cannot
be secure unless its software is secure. Over 90/ of software security
vulnerabilities are caused by simple defects so, to have secure
software, we must strive to produce defect-free software. While
comprehensive testing is essential, the current test-based quality
strategy cannot produce secure systems. The critical need is for
developers who use processes that consistently find and fix defects
before test entry.

Frode L. Odegard
Testing in Lean Software Development
Presentation Overview

In this presentation we will discuss Lean Software Development and its
implications for the testing profession. Lean Software Development
represents a fundamental paradigm shift in software development.
Instead of focusing on individual "best practices", it seeks to provide
an environment in which development is viewed as organizational
learning. The goal is to understand what the customer needs and to
satisfy those needs on a just-in-time basis. Anything that doesn't help
meet customer needs is regarded as waste. The organizational learning
emphasis also applies to how we work. We want to continuously improve
so we can work smarter and faster than our competitors.

Marnie Hutcheson
Security Today: What you Need to Know
Presentation Overview

Hackers and System security issues have changed radically in the past
18 months. The black hats have compromised "Secure" systems in major
and minor companies and government offices everywhere on an
unprecedented scale. They have done this by exploiting vulnerabilities
in applications, databases, and operating systems - vulnerabilities
that could have identified and removed if the test effort had focused
on finding them.

This presentation will acquaint you with the unpublished facts about
the black hat war that is going on everywhere, right now, and will show
you why the software test profession is on the front line of defense
against these bad guys.

Ivy Hooks
Writing Defect-Free Requirements
Presentation Overview

It is obvious that if we do not have the correct requirements we will
not get the desired product. Still every study about cost and schedule
overruns and failed software projects lists requirement problems among
the top three culprits. Clearly, getting defect-free requirements is
difficult, but essential to providing quality, timely and
cost-effective products.

Learning objectives:

* Seeing requirements problems categorized - fix problem not symptom
* Recognizing tools to incorporate in their process to get defect-free
  requirements

Outline:

* Defect types
* Reasons for problems
* How to prevent or remove defects

Dr. James Whittaker
How To Break Software Security
Presentation Overview

What is it that differentiates security bugs from run- of-the-mill
functional bugs? What knowledge, insight and intuition must testers
develop in order to train themselves to find and recognize security
vulnerabilities?

We sought to answer this question by analyzing thousands of security
vulnerabilities that shipped in major products, from operating systems
to browser plug-ins, routers to firewalls. We attempted to understand
each bug in the context of its underlying causal faults , its failure
symptoms and the best method to discover its existence. Thus, we would
end up with understanding how security bugs come into being, how to
look for vulnerabilities' telltale signature and how to go about
finding vulnerabilities in the first place. The end result was a body
of knowledge called How to Break Software Security .

This talk is a fun, entertaining and educational journey through the
security testing techniques that make up How to Break Software Security
. You will learn many new and novel ways to force software applications
(of whatever variety) to fail in ways that are exploitable by hackers

Tom Gilb
Why Software Projects Fail, How to Diagnose Potential Failure, and How
to Make Your Projects Succeed
Presentation Overview

It is well known, and well documented, that far too many engineering
projects fail totally or partially: both in civil engineering [Morris],
and in software engineering [Neill]. I think everybody has some
opinions about this. I do too, having worked over several decades as an
international consultant on a wide range of projects, and having been
involved in saving many 'almost failed' projects. I will present some
of my conclusions, and hope to lend some originality to the discussion.
My basic premises are that:

* We fail to accurately specify our requirements in sufficient detail
* We do not sufficiently focus our design and project management
  energies on meeting the requirements

Database Security: Is your data vulnerable?
Presentation Overview

There are many levels of software security. How secure it the most
important component of your application: your database? Quality Control
organizations must step up to the challenge of ensuring data security
with appropriate tests that focus on this vital area. In this session
you'll learn what your test team needs to know about protecting your
server, your database connections, controlling access to your database
tables and restricting access to the database server itself.

If your data is in jeopardy, your entire system is at risk. Learn the
basics about testing to ensure protection for the critical database
component.

Robin Goldsmith, JD
What Test-Driven Development Can Learn from Professional Testers
Presentation Overview

Writing executable tests before writing program code is a well-accepted
eXtreme Programming practice to cut both delivery time and defects.
This interactive session shows how even greater beneficial effects can
be achieved by also applying several additional Proactive Testing
techniques. These methods help participants become aware that
developers, users, and even professional testers typically overlook
many important test conditions. Checklists and guidelines are provided
to fill these often huge gaps in the tests themselves. By capturing
such knowledge in reusable test designs, more thorough tests can be
reliably written in a fraction of the time. Moreover, Proactive Testing
techniques are described to prevent the more difficult-to-fix types of
errors that ordinarily are not found until system testing, user
acceptance testing, or production.

Linda Hayes
Building Testable Applications
Presentation Overview

The latest software development tools and techniques are delivering
more functionality faster than ever, yet these productivity gains are
often lost during the test phase because these applications can be
tested only manually. This happens because generated code is generally
treated as throwaway, which means that automated test scripts can't be
reused. In other cases developers don't expose the information that
automated tests need to work, or incorporate third party components
that aren't accessible.

Find out what it takes to develop applications that support test
automation and enable the long term maintenance of test libraries, and
learn how to educate both development and senior management about the
importance of designing in testability.

Evaluating Business Requirements
Course Description

Poorly defined requirements cause up to two-thirds of software errors,
yet few organizations know effective methods to assure requirements are
accurate and complete. At most, they use one or two weak methods and
don't recognize the weakness. This interactive session introduces 21
methods with increasing power. Following the CAT-Scan Approach?,
participants apply the techniques successively to a real case and
discover how each different method reveals additional,
otherwise-overlooked defects when they are easiest and least expensive
to fix. Participants learn ways to find previously overlooked
requirements, increase meaningful customer/user involvement, enhance
communications and understanding, and truly test the adequacy of
requirements definitions.

This course shows ways to test that requirements which already have
been collected are accurate, clear, and complete. The course is not
describing how to test that the delivered software meets the
requirements.

Nor is it intended to teach how to discover requirements, although the
testing methods do suggest methods which would help discovery. Our
companion course, Defining and Managing User Requirements, does
concentrate on teaching how to discover, analyze, and document
requirements.

How to Break Software
Course Description

What is it that makes a really good tester? I mean a really good
tester! What intuition do they have that leads them so surely to the
best bugs?

We sought to answer this question by analyzing thousands of bug
reports. We attempted to understand each bug in the context of its
underlying causal faults, its failure symptoms and the best method to
discover its existence. Thus, we would end up with understanding how
bugs come into being, how to look for a bug's telltale signature and
how we go about finding bugs in the first place. To our great surprise,
we invented testing techniques that were not published anywhere. Thus,
How to Break Software was created.

This course is a fun, entertaining and educational journey through the
testing techniques that make up How to Break Software. You will learn
many new and novel ways to force software applications (of whatever
variety) to fail. You will also see old, tried- and-true techniques
explained in fresh ways. Prepare to learn why software fails and to
force it to do just that.

========================================================================
Evolutionary Project Management
Course Description

This tutorial will supply the participant with the pragmatics of doing
evolutionary project management. The Evo toolkit. How do you specify
objectives that you can evolve towards in small steps? How do you
specify designs that can be decomposed into smaller delivery steps? How
do you specify and control evolutionary stakeholder-value-delivery
steps themselves? The toolkit give practical help.

Evo has major impact on the whole way in which systems engineering is
carried out. All systems engineering processes (requirements, design,
build, test, and quality control) are suddenly encapsulated into an
early and frequent evolutionary result delivery step. If you know what
you are doing you will soon produce results for stakeholders. If not,
you won't; and must consequently fix your engineering processes and
designs.

Structured Query Language Fundamentals for Test Professionals
Course Description

Who is this for? Test Engineers required to test an application's
interface with a relational database.

Today's heterogeneous data environments place an increasingly heavy
burden on test engineers. Applications, whether web-based or
client-server, must be tested for seamless interface with the backend
databases. Testers are required to know how to create and use SQL,
stored procedures, and other database objects to effectively test
today's data driven environments. They also need to know how to
successfully test objects such as stored procedures and views in an
application's databases. This course will teach the tester the basics
of Structured Query Language for use in testing relational databases.
Attendees will learn the SQL constructs and features necessary to
formulate and implement test cases uncovering bugs in database systems
causing data corruption. Common hacks for leaving databases vulnerable
to attack will be covered including test cases for protecting against
SQL Injection attacks.

System and Application Testing for Security Vulnerabilities
Course Description

Are your software systems vulnerable to attack? If your system has a
server in it or a database, it is vulnerable. Even if it exists in a
secure closed network with no outside connections, i.e. the Internet,
it is still vulnerable. If your application has a single data entry
point in it, then your system is vulnerable. Even if your system does
not contain any business intelligence, financial information, or
strategic information it can still be a worthwhile a target for
hackers, simply for its computing power and its connections, or the
damage it could do if it failed. Making sure that your applications and
systems are secure is a big job. Traditional "Security" groups focus on
the Network and a few simple Attack Vectors. This passive approach to
detecting security breaches through systems monitoring is not adequate
to protect our systems from today's hackers who can compromise security
and disable a machine in 15 seconds. Or, they can take control of a
machine in less than 3 minutes. We must take a very ag !!!

Extreme Inspection
Course Description

How can you cheaply and objectively measure the quality of systems
engineering specifications? I call this discipline Specification
Quality Control. It is based on sampling (early and frequently) of
ongoing engineering specification on absolutely all requirements,
design, contracts, bids, engineering diagrams, test plans and software
artifacts. The process is based on counting defects with respect to
written official specification standards, and extrapolating to get a
truer count of major defects and their consequences. It is based on
setting a formal economic limit of major defects per page allowed
before exit to other engineering processes. SQC effectively teaches
adherence to standards, and is capable of giving clear early warning
signals to project management, while there is still time to rectify bad
work. The method has been proven and documented to save millions of $
in rework costs in aircraft, electronics and software industries.

Conducting Cost-Effective Performance Testing
Course Description

With the mass migration of applications from a client-server to a
web-based framework, system architectures are once again becoming
centralized. This centralization has created a huge need for
performance testing. However, even to a seasoned functional test
automation professional, the transition to performance testing can seem
daunting. The attendee should be familiar with standard quality
assurance concepts and processes. The presentation covers technical
concepts necessary to understanding the performance testing practice
but presents the material in such a way as to be appreciated by both
technical and less-technical practitioners.
