Template Poisson disk tiles
Abstract
Poisson disk distributions have many applications in computer graphics. Apart from sampling, they are used in object distribution, primitive distribution for illustration and procedural texturing. Unfortunately, Poisson disk distributions are very expensive to generate. A promising family of techniques for efficiently generating Poisson disk distributions use Poisson disk tiles. These are square tiles filled with a precomputed set of Poisson disk distributed points. Tiled Poisson disk distributions can be generated efficiently by tiling the plane with these tiles. In this paper we present template Poisson disk tiles, a new kind of Poisson disk tiles. Template Poisson disk tiles are very easy to construct, and allow a simple tiling procedure. The number of points per tile and the number of tiles in the set can be chosen freely. This allows us to study the effect of these parameters on the spectral properties of the generated Poisson disk distributions, a problem ignored by previous methods.
